Leaders must be serious about Climate Change- Former Prez. Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has asked world leaders, especially, African governments to show serious political commitment towards addressing climate change issues and find ways to mitigate its impacts on their people

He said the inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which seeks to assess the progress in understanding climate change, confirms that climate change is a manifestation of human impacts on the earth’s natural climate. Read more

Project mixes local, expert know-how to predict weather

Combining meteorology and traditional methods of weather prediction could increase uptake of weather information by local communities in rural areas of Tanzania, experts say.

Scientists from Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA), Hakikazi Catalyst — a non-profit organisation in Tanzania that empowers people with information — and the UK-based International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), indicate that such collaborative prediction could improve people’s access to climate information. Climate change is with us and we must take action, an expert calls

The negative consequences of climate change on agricultural production and productivity are with us and resolutions must be implemented to save West and Central Africa, said the Director General, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Dr Nteranya Sanginga.

Addressing national and international researchers attending a conference on Biotic stresses, climate change and agricultural production in Cotonou, Bénin, Dr Sanginga noted that the emergence of agricultural pests such as the papaya mealybug was closely linked to climate change, and stressed that there was the need to go beyond rhetoric to action. Canada and UK’s consortia to tackle key adaptation issues in Africa and Asia

Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) announced today the Asian institutions that would be part of four new multi-partner research consortia for tackling the impacts of climate change in Africa and Asia. Funded under the Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) program, a seven-year, CAD 70 million research initiative, the consortia take a fresh approach to understanding climate change and finding ways to adapt in some of the most vulnerable regions of Africa and Asia.
